I see references to documentation in some of the forum comments. Is documentation available?

There is no comprehensive documentation yet. In this moment, all available documentaion is the Getting started guide and msscmd.exe help page. And this forum, that someday could generate a FAQ document.

MsSqlSpatial is very similar to PostGIS and other OGC compliant spatial database extensions, so their documentation may be useful to some extent, specially introductory and conceptual sections. See:

I think the table of contents of any of the linked manuals above would be a good starting point to document MsSqlSpatial. BTW, I'm looking for volunteers for documentation. Would you like to help? ;)

Ricardo Stuven.

Hi Ricardo Stuven,

First, kudos for MsSqlSpatial! A customer had asked me about Spatial DB on SQL Server and this was the natural choice. That fits!

But they also asked for a tutorial. So, I've been working on the creation of a 'MsSqlSpatial for newcommers'.

I'm writing it in portuguese but after finished will be easy to translate it to english. I pretend to post it at my website( ) but I think it's more important to have it at MsSqlSpatial site first.

How should I do? Can I send a copy of it for you? Or do you prefer I wiki it for u? ( despite I never wikied under CodePlex, I know MediaWiki's wikimarkup )

The draft of the text looks like this:
//Spatial Database using MS-SQL Server//

1 - Step by step setup
1.1 - .NET framework 2.0
1.2 - Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express
1.2.1 - Enabling MIXED MODE logins
1.2.2 - Protocols
1.2.3 - Other important configurations
1.2.4 - References
1.3 - Books Online
1.4 - SQL Server Management Studio Express
1.5 - MsSqlSpatial
1.5.1 - Defining a test database
1.5.2 - Enabling MsSqlSpatial extension at the test database
1.5.3 - Notes & References
1.6 - MDAC 2.8
2 - Introducing MsSqlSpatial
2.1 - Defining spatial tables
2.1.1 - ST.ImportFromShapefile
2.1.2 - msscmd
2.1.3 - Create spatial tables by hand
2.2 - Running spatial queries
- SQL samples on SQL Server Management Studio Express
- VB6 sample using MDAC 2.8
2.3 - Viewing MsSqlSpatial maps
- MapServer ( using ODBC connectors)
- MapServer WMS / WFS maps ( lot of clients)
- SharpMap ( with MS VC# Express or SharpDevelop )
- FWTools OpenEV ( just open the .ovf file)

currently, I'm writing 2.1.3 section.

That's great. Now you have permission to create new pages in the wiki. Please, put your material there and let's see how we follow the work together. I am not a native English speaker either, so we'll need some help from people with better English skills.

Best regards,
Ricardo Stuven.
